Quote of the month
“We are built to conquer environment, solve problems, achieve goals, and we find no real satisfaction or happiness in life without obstacles to conquer and goals to achieve.”
~ Maxwell Maltz
Take AIM principle of the month
The Take AIM system for optimal performance came from working with athletes and business professionals who were seeking improved performance. What I found was that these individuals had the “physical skills” to perform at the highest level; they lacked the mental and emotional skills to apply their skills under pressure.
Each month I will introduce you to the key principles of the Take AIM system. This month we are going to cover Assessing one’s potential challenges.
I have seen it time after time how individuals get excited about their goal and they start off in the correct direction, however once a challenge arises they stop dead in their tracks. Part of my Take AIM system deals with this problem by incorporating two skills.
- The first is to project what the potential challenges are before you start down the road of goal achievement. Setting goals is an optimistic process, yet there has to be a reality check of what is in store in the process. I ask my clients to think of potential challenges that could arise on the road toward achieving their goals. Common challenges are time delays, money shortage, technology glitches, and poor support from team members. Knowing potential challenges allows you to plan for different scenarios to achieve your goals. Brainstorm how you would handle each of the potential challenges. This exercise prepares you for the worse, which in turn gives you the best opportunity to overcome these challenges.
- The second skill is the bounce back mentality. This comes from professional golf where the best (Tiger Woods) will comeback after a poor score on a hole with a birdie or par on the next hole. This skill is about not letting a down performance affect the next performance. This is the same in sales when an individual doesn’t let a lost sale affect the next sales opportunity. Unfortunately I have seen where an individual stays frustrated and loses focus because of facing a challenge. The mental toughness of staying focused on the process of solving the challenge is where you want your mind to go. When facing a challenge the mindset is the determining factor for success.
As you move forward to achieving more, realize more challenges are right around the corner. Make a decision today to be ready for them and deal with them in a focused, positive way.
