Take AIM principle of the month

The Take AIM system for optimal performance came from working with athletes and business professionals who were seeking improved performance. What I found was that these individuals had the “physical skills” to perform at the highest level; they lacked the mental and emotional skills to apply their skills under pressure.

Each month I will introduce you to the key principles of the Take AIM system. This month we are going to cover Assessing your beliefs.

Working with high achievers has taught me the importance of confidence in determining who wins and who loses. Confidence comes from a belief about your ability. Confidence fuels performance as it keeps you focused on the task at hand with no doubts. Confidence can be general, like “I am a confident person” or very specific, “I am a confident presenter in front of the board of directors.” You can begin assessing your beliefs by asking questions.

Start assessing where your beliefs are in certain areas that affect your performance. If you are in sales, ask yourself, “what is my belief about how I close sales?” If you are a golfer ask yourself, “Do I believe l can hit that shot on the last hole to win the tournament?”

Another way to assess your beliefs is by doing a fill in the blank exercise. For example I ask all my competitive golfers to finish the sentence, “I am a ______ putter.” If they answer it with great, average, or poor that is their belief. That belief will drive performance especially when they need to make a putt to win a tournament. As the saying goes, whether you believe you can or believe you can’t, you are right. By assessing your beliefs you can start to uncover limiting beliefs that are hindering performance, instead of beliefs that empower you. In a future newsletter I will teach ways to implement new empowering beliefs to achieve optimal performance.
